We’ve never been more brow obsessed than we are right now. Shaping, grooming, and constantly maintaining eyebrows has become a necessary beauty practice. It girls, actors and models alike have been defined by their brows, for better or worse, for the past century. Here are some of the most iconic arches from the past.

Let’s start with the 1920’s.

German actress Marlene Dietrich made drawn on, super thin brows all the rage. Her’s were a little more glamorous than the everyday woman, but one thing is for sure; thin was definitely in.

1930’s Greta Garbo took the change of decade in her stride, bringing a slighter arch back into Vogue.

1940s – By the 40s, women were after a softer, more natural look. The age of Hollywood glamour had hit the world as women looked to movie stars like Katherine Hepburn, the It-girl of the era, for inspiration.

1950s – By the 50s, bold was in with a vengeance. Audrey Hepburn’s fame was just beginning and women wanted something different. The threat of war was over and society was blooming – it only made sense eyebrows did too.

Marilyn Monroe’s full eyebrows (and skirts) inspired a decade of women.

1960s – The full brow bloom didn’t last long – the 60s saw the return of the thin brow, as seen on Brigitte Bardot.

Sophia Loren famously shaved her eyebrows off and painted them back on; in the process inspiring a whole generation of women. Her painter-thin brows would become iconic.

1970s – The eyebrow situation only got thinner in the 70s, and with disco fever and big hair came small brows. Although Elizabeth Taylor’s brows remained defined, Liza Minnelli was an example of those who opted for the over plucked look.

1980s – 70s ladies were in for a shock come 1980, when the world saw a return to the big and bold. Shoulder pads, big hair, neon… bushier eyebrows. Cindy Crawford’s supermodel status was enough to make her an icon, but we think her brows are legendary too.

1990s – No woman in the 90s was spared from the tweezer. It came for anyone and everyone, including the incredibly over-plucked Pamela Anderson.

2000s – With many ladies tweezing the death from their poor eyebrows in the 90s, the use of the pencil skyrocketed in the naughties.

Now – As with all trends, the good ones come back time and time again. Once again we’re seeing a rise in beautiful, natural brows thanks to the likes of Brow Queen Cara Delevingne. A far cry from the thin, dull brows of the naughties, it’s safe to say we’re glad. We’re sure the trend is here to stay for at least the time being — yet if history is anything to go by, who knows exactly how long it’ll stick around.
